Nokia’s push for free GPS navigation software to combat Google map navigation

January 25 Nokia has it all built-in GPS, mobile phones are free to use the navigation service, hope to the smart phone market and Apple, as well as more competitive than Google.

From last Thursday, Nokia to use the software can be downloaded free of charge, so that you can use the GPS mobile phone Ovi Maps and Navigation, there are many city attractions books. Nokia already offers maps and navigation capabilities of more than DELL INSPIRON 6400 battery years. In his 2007 following the acquisition of Navteq, Nokia strengthened the passers-by navigation services, and other vendors to provide value-added services, such as Lonely Planet.

Before the client can only be free access to basic maps, intersection turn navigation and city attractions, however, is the need for additional charges.

Now, four from the last week, Nokia will provide these services free of charge, initially including 10 phones, such as the Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and the Nokia E72, and eventually the software will be available to all Nokia GPS mobile phone, and will encounter contained in the new GPS phones.

According to research firm Canalys said that at the end of 2009 there are about 27 million worldwide users of mobile phones have GPS navigation function. Nokia estimated mobile phone navigation service can be provided free of charge to the size raised to 50 million.

“We believe that in this way will be put into the mobile navigation market, the mainstream market,” Nokia’s Executive Vice President Tero Ojanper said.

Although Nokia is still the world’s largest mobile phone maker, but in the past few years, high-end smart phone market, faced with strong competition from Apple and RIM’s lost a lot of territory. The competition in 2010 will be even more DELL INSPIRON 500M battery because there are more smart phones with Google Android OS to join this market.

Consumers are all available in these applications run on mobile phones come into view. Google provides maps and navigation functions are mission-critical applications on these devices.

And the bars on Google

Nokia believes that personal navigation and location-based services, will be their main points of difference, so that they can stay ahead of competitors. Nokia in particular, that their maps and navigation services beyond Google itself is free and available to many mobile phones such as iPhone, Droid, and Nexus one used on Google Maps and navigation.

For example, Nokia Ovi Map service support in 74 countries and 46 languages, while in more than 10 countries traffic and road conditions, detailed site plans, providing more than 180 countries.

“Google provides car navigation in one country, while we are in 74 countries provide navigation, we have an absolute correlation between globalization,” Ojanper said.

In addition Ojanper also said that Nokia’s services for telecom operators better, because their services and applications, compared to Google Maps, it is rather provincial bandwidth.

Ojanper said that Nokia used Google Maps and efficient technology than ten times. Nokia is targeting vector used is called the mixed-mode (hybrid vectorizing mapping method), so that users can zoom maps without the need to repeatedly download the same map. Instead Google’s technology, when the user to zoom in when you need to re-download the DELL 1691P battery, so that the use of increased bandwidth.

This strategy may be particularly useful in the United States, Nokia’s market share in the United States is weak, and the carriers subsidize the phone very little. For many years high-end Nokia phones in the United States are sold directly to the user an empty machine, but when you’re tied after about 99 U.S. dollars you can buy the iPhone, a 500 U.S. dollars an empty machine looks less attractive.

Ojanper said that Nokia would continue to sell an empty machine, but its main targets will be focused on telecoms operators and the United States.

No matter what the channel to sell Nokia’s choice, one thing is certain. They need to spend a lot of money on mass-marketing of their Ovi Maps and navigation. After all, computer users are familiar with most of Google, looks set to be on more familiar with Google Maps.

Nokia’s Navteq and Ovi brand is relatively less well-known, so there are a lot of efforts Nokia’s room.

January 19 International reported that Apple and Nokia’s patent war with the last Friday Apple’s intention to enter the United States against Nokia and heating.

Apple is the International Trade Commission (International Trade Commission) proceedings. This is an independent federal agency dedicated to cases involving patent, trademark and copyright violations of unfair trade cases.

In December, Nokia’s move to Washington, the U.S. APPLE A1185 battery Trade Commission proceedings. Nokia claims that Apple infringed seven patents in virtually every (Apple) all of the smart phones, portable music players and computers, and should be to prohibit importation of Apple’s iPhone, iPod, and Macbook.

The latest move for Apple, Nokia spokesman Mark Durrant told Bloomberg that “Nokia will be received pleadings, after careful study, and active defense. However, this did not affect the apple did not comply with the terms of the use of Nokia technology and trying to in 2007 the first iPhone to market accounting for the fact that Nokia R & D innovation and cheaper. “

How to change the preferences in navigation?

Sorry if this is a commonly mentioned thing, but I couldn’t find it anywhere..
I can’t seem to find out where the preferences/settings are so I can turn off the highway option.
Every time I turn navigation on to go somewhere it directs me towards the Parkway/Turnpike. How can I make it so it avoids them? I could do this on my Env2 but can’t find it on here.

Navigation and data connection question

Posted on 15th January 2010 by garret in Droid Updates | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,
Is there any way to get around needing a data connection for the GPS to work? I just went on a trip and realized that I couldn’t use the GPS because I had no data connection. It did find a connection at one point and downloaded the map, but when i exited out (accidentally, and it was obviously a bad idea…) it was gone, but at least my route was still there. However, when i tried on the way back, it kept trying to find the route and wouldn’t even give me directions without a map.

Shouldn’t there be a way to download maps and store them on the SD card or something?

Google Maps Navigation ETA is not accurate

Just curious if others have noticed inaccurate time estimates. Here’s the reply I received from the Google team:
"We’ve received feedback about the Google Maps Navigation ETA time being inaccurate at times, and we’re making server-side improvements to address this issue. You should see a steady improvement over the ETA time over the coming months. At this time, there’s no way to customize or modify the time estimation algorithm in Google Maps."
