Phone Appearance

The Nexus is slimmer than an iPhone, which gives you an idea of how sleek it is. Not only is it sleek, but it looks very stylish as well. Its size makes it a perfect fit for your pocket, handbag and palm. So is this the one phone that will finally outshine the iPhone or upstage the new Motorola Droid? Well, it sure could. For one, the design of the Nexus is a lot better than those two, although this is usually a matter of personal opinion.

Phone Performance

When you try to move between home pages, you’d notice that the transition is very smooth and fast, especially when compared with the iPhone and Droid. In addition, the speed in opening various phone applications such as Google maps, or any other application that requires you to go through a lengthy list, is very impressive.

One problem though is that the multi-touch function is not included in the Nexus, which basically means that you still need to press one button at a time. This is a bit of a disappointment for most people, considering that the Nexus One has such a beautiful touch screen to play around with.

Google has included a lot of visual enhancements on the phone that you will probably like. There is a set of flashy wallpapers that react to the touch, going animated when you are on the home page. There is no sliding drawer on this phone, with Google choosing to put a direct home button and several icons which all wrap around a 3-dimensional cube. There are five home screens that you can choose from as well.

Those who have tried the Nexus have reported that the keyboard is a lot more responsive, which might be partly because of the Snapdragon.

Clearly, this phone combines both form and function. A lot of mobile phone aficionados are waiting to get their hands on the Google Nexus One.

Having a hard time keeping its head afloat these days, the American manufacturer Motorola veiled off its second Android phone in Europe, save for UK. But UK fans need not worry. Though there is no official word on the UK release date, leaks have it that it is sure to hit the area in early 2010. Too late maybe for wooing Christmas shoppers for the holiday as for now, we could not fathom the exclusion of UK.

Motorola definitely need to spark some serious Motorola gadget lust with this new release. As it seems, the Milestone is headed for success with its awesome features and full specs that sets new standards for smart phones. Indeed, Milestone could be a fitting name for this model. Many Europeans feel though that it is overly “standard” compared to the cool sounding “Droid”.

It features and impressive 3.7 inch capacitive touch screen and has multi-touch (certainly great). In addition to its impressive screen in terms of display quality and size, it slides up when held horizontally to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. It is heralded as the slimmest full keyboard to date.

High-End Smart Phone

A pure-blooded Android, the Milestone will have around 10,000 apps available. It also has an ultra-fast 550 MHZ processor in the same league with the iPhone GS. This gives the phone multi tasking ability at an impressive speed.

Milestone appears to be a high end smart phone. It is HSDPA and Wi-fi ready in addition to its 3G capability. It has an on-board GPS that can be your navigation companion. It is also pre-loaded with MOTONAV which is Motorola’s own mapping system.

On board memory is only 256 MB but it has MicroSD card slot that can support an upgrade of up to 32GB. Puzzlingly, it comes with a card that has 8 GB capacity.

It also has a 5 mega pixel shooter with autofocus and dual LED flash. The high resolution video capture with 720 x 480 pixel resolution at 24 frames per second is impressive. In addition, it has a 3.5 mm audio jack, MP3 music player, micro USB port and Bluetooth that supports music streaming.

Great Promise

With its awesome features, it holds a great promise of making it big outside the US. After losing market shares time and again, Motorola indeed may have found the key to its rise again. But the greatest factor in the enthusiastic consumer response, which is apparent even way ahead of the launch, could be Google’s Operating System, Android.

Android Happy

Motorola places great trust in Android and has announced that it is going to release more Android-based products next year. Banking on Google’s fledgling yet very promising mobile phone OS could be in the right direction. The Android offers great customization features that appeal to the independent spirit of many smart phone users. Added to that is the slew of Google-supported applications that are so popular with both business and personal users plus other cool applications that need no further marketing gimmicks to get going.

Although other companies also offer Android happy phones, we think that the Android market is big enough for Motorola to get a serious chunk out of the whole.

Released in November 2009, the Motorola Milestone certainly seems to have lived up to its namesake, for the manufacturer at least. It’s been a while since Motorola have released a handset which is truly groundbreaking. But that looks set to change with the Milestone. A powerful combination of features is housed in a functional but attractive handset.

Measuring 115.8×60x13.7mm the Milestone weighs in at 165g. Whilst not the lightest phone on the market, users are left with no doubts about the build quality. The 3.7” TFT capacitive touchscreen is capable of displaying up to 16million colours at 480×854 pixels. Navigation and text input options are not limited to the touchscreen as the Milestone also boasts a slide out full QWERTY keyboard. An accelerometer is installed which senses when the phone has been tilted and rotates the on screen image accordingly so it can be viewed in both portrait and landscape forms.

As well as vibration, users are alerted to incoming calls via ringing with the option to utilize MP3 and WAV music files as ringtones. A speakerphone is included with stereo speakers allowing hands free communication. A 3.5mm audio jack is provided so hands free kits can be used as well as headphones for listening to music.

Internal storage in the Milestone is 133MB with 256MB RAM. A microSD slot is included with 8GB, memory can be expanded to 32GB allowing plenty of storage for files. A whole host of connectivity options comes with the Milestone. These include GPRS and EDGE, both of which are class 12 versions. Internet access is provided via HSDPA at speeds of up to 10.2Mbps, as well as HSUPA at up to 5.76Mbps. WiFi access allows users to take advantage of various hotspots located around the country.

The Milestone is equipped with a camera boasting 5MP which operates at a pixel resolution of 2692×1944 pixels. This includes autofocus and dual-LED flash. It is also capable of recording video in D1 (720×480 pixels) at 24fps.

A range of music and video file formats are supported by the Milestone’s media player. These can easily be transferred to and from a computer by using the included microUSB port.

A wide range of additional features is also included. These include a digital compass, Adobe Flash Player v10.1 for viewing online video content, a document viewer, organiser, voice memo/dial and T9 predictive text input. Applications allowing direct access to several popular websites include Google search, maps and Gmail, as well as Youtube and Google Talk.

This range of powerful features require a powerful operating system and processor. Accordingly the Milestone is equipped with Android v2 (Eclair) operating system, and a powerful ARM Cortex A8 600MHz processor.

In conclusion, the Motorola Milestone offers everything a user could want from a mobile phone. Its powerful software as well as hardware means it is more than capable of taking up any challenge a mobile can face today.
