What Is The Google Nexus One?

According to many, the Google Nexus One is one of the best – if not the best – Android powered phone currently available on the market. Being even faster than the iPhone 3GS and far more elegant, the Nexus One is definitely the Android signature device that stands out among its competitors in the rapidly growing smartphone industry.

Featuring a Snapdragon 1GHz core processor and 512MB of RAM on an Android 2.1 OS, the Nexus One is a superior device. Coming with a 3.7″ WVGA AMOLED touch screen that natively supports 480 x 800 pixels resolution, the Nexus One blows away the iPhone’s 480 x 320 display, featuring bright and sharp pictures that are an absolute delight to use. Besides, the touch sensitivity is one of a kind, better than any other Android phone launched so far in the market.

The Google Nexus One features no physical keyboard to trade-off for a slimmer design (the Nexus One has a thickness of 11.5mm, while the iPhone 3GS is at 12.3mm), and a lighter weight (the Nexus One weighs 130grams including the battery, while the iPhone 3GS weighs 135grams). Moreover, the device features four well-designed touch buttons at the bottom of the screen, particularly Home, Menu, Search and Back buttons, as well as a navigation trackball that is very familiar to Hero users. Up left there is a volume rocker, up top on one end there is the power button and on the other end there is a 3.5mm headphone jack and at the bottom there is the micro-USB port and the microphone headset. On the back side, the Nexus One features a 5-megapixel camera with flash that allows users to shoot sharp pictures at a unique speed. However, what is even more extraordinary demonstrating Google’s advanced decision making, is the Gallery app that is extremely user friendly allowing users to browse their photos using more options than other Android phones.

Google features excellent 3D graphics in the Nexus One as well as multiple apps that run in the background while the users can enjoy heavy use at the same time. What is absolutely amazing about the Nexus One is that, unlike previous Android smartphones, there is no delay or lag to the phone’s performance as it performs multiple tasks and it doesn’t need to close or slow down apps to keep the device humming. Besides, the device comes with 4 GB Micro SD storage card that can be expandable to 32 GB.

Although the Nexus One is, undoubtedly, a superior smartphone, most reviews mention slight problems with the color balance of the touch screen that makes mostly red and orange colors look oversaturated. Moreover, as soon as the phone is turned on, Google features live wallpapers and animated backgrounds that allow users to interact with. In effect, these features are rather useless and they drain the battery that lasts fairly long considering that it has up to 7 hours of talk time, 250 hours standby, and 5 hours of Internet use on the 3G network, as well as 7 hours of video playback and 20 hours of audio playback. Regardless if the phone needs to be charged rather often, the Google Nexus One is the best Android phone available on the market right now.

so my friend says his Nexus One is superior…

Long story short, he has T-Mobile and the Nexus One. I have Verizon and bought the Droid only a few days ago. His first reaction to the news was that his Nexus One is superior to the Droid in every way. He acts as though his phone is God.

According to him, the Nexus One has a 1 Ghz processor, which he claims is faster than both the iPhone and Droid. But aren’t we able to effectively overclock the Droid and run the processor at similar speeds?

Is the Nexus One really that much better?

I’m not trying to stir any controversy or arguments. I guess it would be nice to have some ammunition to fire back at him with :)

Best Wishes of China Unicom, Best Selling Mobile Phone of China, iPhone or Others?

Best Wishes of China Unicom, Best Selling Mobile Phone of China, iPhone or Others?
China Unicom Expects iPhone to Become the Best Selling Mobile Phone

In order to counter the skepticism by analysts whom said that the handset is too expensive in China, the chairman of China Unicom( Hong Kong) Ltd., Chang Xiaobing, says that he experts iPhone to become the best selling smart phone of China. It is heard very inspiring, however, maybe he had forgotten that, China Unicom have only sold about 5,000 iPhones in the first weekend, at all event, this is far away from his dream.

We have reported the comments, which were made in the first press conference by the company since the device’s launch late in October. There, he told reporters, “We’re very confident about the market position of the iPhone”.

Mr. Chang didn’t offer details on how this would happen, nor how his company would overcome the obstacle of the device’s retail price tag, where the 32GB iPhone 3Gs sells for 7,999 yuan (US$1,172). Like many emerging markets, China’s cellphone market is not based around a carrier-subsidy model. Consumers usually pay the full price for their mobile devices. China Unicom has provided several kinds of discount programs just like the large subsidy which is provided by AT&T. In fact, customers have to pay more for iPhone.

Just an unreal dream?

For example, if you choose the cheapest subsidy package which is about 126 yuan(US $18.5), you have to pay 5 yuan one month for it. In a word, you should pay at least 5000 yuan (US$ 732.5) for the 8 GB iPhone 3Gs. However, in U.S. and European markets, carriers subsidize the price of the iPhone in the form of direct payments to apple. While the U.S. price of the 32GB iPhone is $299, Apple is getting as much as $400-$500 in payments from AT&T once the phone is activated.

Maybe it is the main reason that AT&T has not have any profit in sales and services of iPhone while AT&T has become the exclusive carrier of iPhone in U.S. for more than 2 years. In order to avoid follow suit, China Unicom select a contrary sales way with AT&T, however, it has to face the reality that iPhone had a unprecedented difficult road in China, different from the popular in U.S. and Japan.

And iPhone has not been the unique artwork in smartphone market. Many kinds of imitations from Samsung and other mobile phone manufacturers have become more and more popular, comparing with iPhone, they own the lower price and stronger function. Besides, Motorola Dorid based on Android platform has on sale. It is said that Droid will  replace the top position of iPhone in smartphone market.

In any case,  China Unicom and Apple will face more challenges in China. Maybe it is a good news to them, it is reported that China had about 720 million mobile-phone subscriptions at the end of September, according to government data.

Wireless Telecom: Reduce the Cost of Supporting Different Cell Phones

Most wireless telecom ROI calculations that we see do not consider the cost of the IT group supporting personal wireless telecom services. If you have employees use their personal wireless service and expense a portion of the service cost to the company as wireless telecom strategy for the business (i.e. individual liable), the IT group is commonly asked to support and trouble shoot the different wireless telecom devices. Platforms such as Blackberry, iPhone, Palm, Motorola, the new Droid, LG, etc are all different in terms of their interfaces and maintenance needs. Establishing and keeping expertise across the entire universe of phones is next to impossible.

The official duties of the IT group do not usually include troubleshooting personal mobile devices. However, it is common for users to gravitate to IT for assistance with getting email or accessing the internet, and even accessing corporate applications from their personal wireless device. If you are considering adopting a wireless telecom strategy, an important component of your ROI calculation is be the cost of supporting the many different mobile devices that are in your environment today.

The expense of support may be difficult to calculate. Take some time and try to come up with some supportable assumptions. The costs of supporting personal devices may very well be higher than the projected cost of supporting a corporate plan. Considerable efficiencies can be gained when an organization settles on a corporate wireless telecom strategy; issues of who is authorized to participate in the wireless program, purchasing from a pre-screed and approved list of carrier and devices and entering into a business-wide agreement with 1 or 2 wireless carriers will create cost savings for the long-term.

It is common for the IT department to get help desk calls from an employee who is having trouble with accessing email on their personal device. The call is usually urgent since the employee has invested time trying to fix the problem. The person experiencing the issue may have called the wireless carrier’s customer service. The wireless carrier will refer the user to their IT department for support on email or application issues. Wireless users are, therefore, frequently directed back to the organization with the least control over the service. Once again, IT needs to work miracles.

A much simpler, and ultimately less expensive, solution is to implement a “corporate liable” wireless telecom strategy. To help you manage the wireless telecom strategy, there is a resource where you can get free management software via the internet that can provide the tools you need to manage your program (www.my-tem.com). When the wireless users are on the same platforms, you can begin to control the experience any other IT program.

Expect some set-up and support costs when the new phones are first issued to employees. Consider sourcing the phones from a value-added vendor. The wireless devices can be turned-up, pre-installed and configured with a variety of applications and shipped directly to the employee. A support desk resource can also be purchased to help with the launch and answer early questions. Once you have a wireless telecom program in place, the cost to the organization should decline, providing a strong long-term ROI.

my-tem.com can give you the application you need to build your wireless telecom strategy – absolutely free.

Google Nexus One Vs Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 – Who Wins?

Android mobile phones are very popular at this moment in time/. Pretty much most of the leading phone companies now produce a Android mobile, such as HTC, LG, Samsung and Motorola and more are set to follows this trend. It is a great time for mobile phone fans and more specifically Android fans, as two new handsets are set to enter the market very soon. Ans who are they? Well it will be industry giants – Sony Ericsson and newbies Google. Many people think that Google are already in the market, but there not. Google created the Android Os, but did not put there name to the actual handset, the tag G1 and G2 made people think they where Google phones. Actually, people seem to refer to any Android phone as a Google phone. There upcoming phone, will actually have the Google brand name on the handset.

This mobile phone will be made by HTC, Google’s first own brand mobile phone, named the Nexus one, is undoubtedly a superb piece of engineering. The Nexus one slips into your hand and has some really smooth edges to it. For a phone packed with so many features and fucntions, the Nexus is a light handset – weighing just 130g. This is lighter than both the iPhone and the Motorola Milestone

It has a fantastic 3.7 inch widescreen, AMOLED display, delivering 720×480 pixels resolution. Arguably crisper and clearer than any other display on the market. The Nexus One has a very responsive touchscreen. With a built in 1GHz processor and 512MB RAM, the Google phone runs multiple applications with ease.

The Nexus one has competent multimedia features, rather than anything that will blow your mind – such as the 5 megapixel, autofocus camera with LED flash and its 32GB memory card capacity. Where the Nexus One really impresses, though, is style and design and maybe hype – many people like to own the latest must have gadget and that is what the Nexus One is being labeled as.

Next, we look at the Sony Ericsson X10, which comes under the Xperia family of handsets. this will be Sony Ericssons very first Android device and it has received positive reviews at trade functions and press occasions. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mobile phone, has a powerful 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 32GB internal memory and a impressive 4 inch touchscreen. This is perfect for the Xperia X10’s first class multimedia capabilities for website searching, that is reinforced by HSDPA plus Wi-Fi. The 8 megapixel autofocus camera features an touch focus, LED flash, face detection and geo-tagging and is a much better cameras than what you would find on the Google Nexus one. As you would anticipate with any Sony Ericsson device, the media player is very good and and is compatible with all the major music formats out there as in MP4, MP3, WMV, WMA and e-AAC .

Google Heats Up Smartphone Competition

When Apple debuted the iPhone in 2007, they undoubtedly revolutionized the Smartphone, and raised the bar for other companies to follow in their footsteps. Many have tried, but none have been able to develop “the next iPhone” – this might change on January 5th, 2010. That’s the day Google plans to release the Nexus One, also known as “the Google phone,” a move that is holding the public with anticipation and excitement, and making wireless providers a little uneasy.

The Nexus One is being hailed as an “iPhone killer,” just like every other Smartphone that has come before it. “Though it will be hard in the near term for any competitor to match Apple’s 7.4 million iPhone sales sold last quarter, analysts say interest in the iPhone peaking, and competitors are ready to swallow up new entrants,” wrote CNN Money’s David Goldman. This is good news for Google, as long as the Nexus One has features and benefits that far outweigh those of the iPhone. The Nexus One will be sold on the T-Mobile network. As the number four wireless provider behind Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, the Google phone may give T-Mobile a boost to be in the top three.

First, it was the BlackBerry Storm, RIM’s first touch screen device, although it failed to draw as many customers as anticipated. The next big phone was the Palm Pre, another device with lots of hype, but had little interest with the masses. In November, Google teamed with Verizon and Motorola for the Droid, which has actually become quite popular, but has yet to surpass the number of iPhone users.

What makes the Smartphone competition so close today is the recent news of AT&T customers who are continually unhappy with the service and coverage provided by the wireless company. Last week, unhappy iPhone users participated in a flash mob wherein they used their most data-heavy applications in order to drain the coverage in their areas, trying to send a message to AT&T that their network needs some serious improvements. With rumors of a Verizon-compatible iPhone in 2010 and the widespread unhappiness with AT&T, customers are now looking for something else that is comparable to the iPhone and a wireless provider that can offer similar options; it’s clear that AT&T is slowly losing its power.

Google is ready to take on these customers, many who are already established Google fans themselves. Because the Internet giant has partnered with other companies to develop and include Google operating systems on Smartphones, they have some expertise in the area, which has given them a foot in the door, and customers will have some familiarity with the system. Still, it is important to note that Google doesn’t have experience in hardware. Their expertise lies in software, which could be problematic with this new phone.

With little information released about the Nexus One, the only hype we have to rely on is the fact that it’s coming from Google. Still, the question remains – what makes it different? The Android gave us Google Maps navigation, a breakthrough that even GPS systems can’t offer. The iPhone has impressive apps that make it more than just a phone – it can be a TV, a gaming system, a music player, even…

Tips For Getting The Most Of Your Phone’s Charge

I was talking with my colleagues this week about my previous column on keeping your cellphone charged when the lights go out, and they asked about my comment that I could get 24 hours out of a normal iPhone charge.

That conversation got me thinking about all the changes you can make to settings on your phone to extend battery life.

These tips pertain to the iPhone, but many can also work on a Droid or Pre.

• The first setting I adjust to save battery life is the screen brightness. Turn off the auto-brightness setting and make a manual brightness setting.

On a normal day, I might set my brightness slider to just less than halfway. When I know I’m going to need more juice, I set it to just above the point where the backlight goes out.

• Never put your phone away with the screen on. Always use the sleep button to turn off the LCD. On my phone, if I set it down with the screen on, it stays on for 60 seconds – that’s wasting power.

• Then I turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Never have Bluetooth enabled unless you’re actively using a headset or other Bluetooth accessory.

• Turn off the phone’s 3G radio and use the Edge network only. This works well if you’re just making phone calls and checking e-mail.

• Turning off push notifications and push e-mail is also a big power saver. Unless you’re on call, I suggest setting your e-mail program to check for new mail every 15 minutes or longer. You can always check mail manually if you are expecting a message.

• Location services (GPS) is also a big battery drain. Turn that off unless you need to find your location on a map.

Feel free to adjust any or all of these system settings to extend your phone’s battery life.

A Review Of The Google Nexus One Mobile Phone

The term Nexus is a link or way of connecting different things together as one; its also can mean the centre of something You may recognize the word Nexus before in a well known Ridley Scott film. So the first significant mobile event of the new decade: the launch of Google’s initial Android phone – the eagerly awaited Nexus One – pieces together almost all that is great and good in the mobile device world. This is undoubtedly a superb piece of engineering.

In terms of design, the Google Nexus One is very sleek and fits nicely into the palm of your hand or your pocket without weighing you down. Weight just 130g, the Google mobile phone is slimmer, narrower and lighter than the Apple iPhone and the Motorola Milestone.

The Google Nexus One mobile phone, nicely fits the bill for what you would expect from a 2010 smartphone. Not least is the fantastic 3.7 inch widescreen, AMOLED screen, delivering 720×480 pixels resolution. Arguably crisper and clearer than any other display on the market, it delivers touchscreen responsiveness definitely in the ballpark of the iPhone and, moreover, it is fast.

The combination of Android 2.1 sitting above a Snapdragon CPU clocked at 1GHz with 512Mb RAM and ROM really does enable you to zap through opening up applications and then moving between them, even on EDGE, where 3G is unavailable.

Its multimedia credentials, are quietly competent rather than superb – such as a 5 megapixel camera that comes with autofocus with a LED built in flash and its 32GB memory card capacity. A really innovative feature on the Nexus One is a app that has been named Google Goggles this applocation tries to recognize what is in a photo. At the moment Google Goggles is able to recognize contact information, artwork, wine, logos, place and books and Google is working on this app so it will evetually be able to recognise a few more.

A lively little feature that has certainly captured the blogosphere’s attention is what are called “live wallpapers”, already featured on Motorola’s Droid. The Google Nexus One has a choice of 10 such animated images that can evolve throughout the day. Other more useful features and functions on the Google Nexus One include, a proximity sensor – this will avoid you accidently pressing buttons when the phone is up against your ear and a highly effective speakerphone.

Where the Google Nexus One mobile phone really standsout, is in what could be called its charisma – if it could walk into a crowded room, heads would most definitely turn. The Google Nexus One comes in a substance that is Teflon coated and has been classed as being as soft and rubbery.

For the time being, the Google Nexus One is in pole position for 2010. We will have to wait and see what Samsung’s new Bada operating system will have to offer later in the year. So 2010 looks set to be, if not exactly a space odyssey, then a fun filled journey though all that is faster, snappier and wow-ier in the mobile device world.

A Look at the Iphone and Android

Google’s gPhone with Android, an alliance of over 35 different carriers and device providers that have joined forces to bury the iPhone and replace it with the gPhone.

With the rumors circulating around a unique open source-coded phone called ‘gPhone’, people suspected this might just be able to hurt Apple’s monopoly on their niche. With the release of the retitled ‘G1′, this might just be able to win it out.

We’re going to break everything down and look at each individual part of each phone, and decide who is the winner in this unique and fierce cell phone war.

The Basic Design

The iPhone’s design is something that many can identify on sight – smooth lines, shining back, and a touch screen that’s a comfortable size for use.

Holding the iPhone is easy, though actually using it takes some getting used to. The buttons have a distinctive ’squishy’ feel to them, and bigger fingers tend to have issues, as they would with any touch screen.

Overall, the design itself is smooth and streamlined.

G1 has a similarly smooth and sleek design, but there are serious differences between these phones that make them unmistakable. The biggest being the QWERTY keypad that you can get when you push the screen to the side.

The buttons of the keypad feel a little rubbery, but it’s a nice feeling, and you can get a firm grip as you type and send messages. The screen is clear, crisp, and greets you warmly.

How it Operates

The iPhone’s deep and sophisticated operating system has been developed and polished for a while, and you can tell when using and navigating with your phone.

However, Android – the system – is slightly unpolished, and does not offer the style of an iPhone. It works fine for an early release. However, after a while of playing with it, that they had waited to release it and put those final touches on it.

The Camera

The iPhone’s camera is what you would expect from a smaller phone – it’s okay, with decent quality when you take into perspective it’s not a dedicated camera.

The G1’s camera is 3mp of crisp, clear quality. Need a quick picture while out of friends or in the heat of a moment? You will be surprised how it comes out, and the auto focus is simply fabulous. Its picture quality is impressive.

The Real Advantage: Software

If you’ve ever used an iPhone, or any Smartphone for that matter, you’ll probably notice that you have little software options. The browser that comes with it is what you use. The mail options are as they are – no choice.

You’ll be able to download new software and features from various websites and places. Android is completely open source, and as the platform gets more attention and as applications are released your options will expand.

Overall

The G1 is a great phone, but right now, it’s simply in the shadow of Apple’s iPhone. But don’t count this baby out, because as more and more features and options are available, it will just get better.

In truth, the G1 has the real potential to outshine any other phone on the market right now. If you’re the type of person who switches phones every few months, go with an iPhone. But if you’re searching for a phone that’s going to just get better with time, the G1 is certainly the ticket for you.
