Motorola Droid Data Plan Needed?

I got the Blackberry Storm, and I’m tired of it. I’m due for an upgrade so I’ll be getting the Motorola Droid when it comes out. My question is, rather than pay the 30 bucks a month for the stupid “Data Plan” can I leave off that plan and just use my phone for WiFi if I really want internet?
