Unofficial ICS build for the Motorola Droid 4 has been Leaked! Proceed with Caution.

Posted on 17th May 2012 by gacott in Droid Talk | Tags: , , , , , , ,
This is the moment that we have been waiting for, an official build of ICS for our beloved Droid 4 devices. Except this isn’t really an official build. That may not come for the next several months. What we do have is proof that Motorola IS working on an ICS build. This build was leaked via the Cheescake app. This will take you off the official upgrade path so you WILL be stranded. You won’t be able to FXZ your way back to gingerbread either, and this build is not rootable via any known method so far. I would highly encourage you to stay away from this build, unless you are comfortable with being on an unofficial leak for the longevity of your device. There are other ways to experience ICS on your D4 now like CyanogenMod 9 via Safestrap. However if curiosity is getting the best of you and you must flash this just know you have been warned. The file and install method can be found in the link below!

Another Unofficial leak for the Motorola Droid Bionic. 5.9.905 Anyone?

Posted on 16th May 2012 by gacott in Droid Talk | Tags: , , , , , , ,

Motorola is taking their sweet time in getting ICS rolled out to their devices! Ice Cream Sandwich was made available almost half a year ago. Motorola did release an upgrade rollout chart a few months back. It however did not specify any time table as to when it would have the update out. The Atrix and Photon are scheduled for Q3 2012. Hopefully the ICS update comes out before Jelly Bean Android 5.0! Sometimes it makes you wonder if we will ever see the release on these Motorola devices. It is always nice to see a leak here or there to at least remind us that the manufacturer is still working on it. DroidForums member Dave12308 found a new update in the Cheescake app labeled 5.5.905. This is not ICS, In fact it looks like the only change here is the CDMA radio, but this is the latest version of GingerBread available and is hopefully a step towards an ICS release.

In the past Cheescake updates were notorious for leaving folks stranded on a leaked build with no easy way back to the official upgrade path. However this leak appears to be pretty safe. Dave12308 says that not only is it Rootable via Motofail, but you can also FXZ back to .902 to get yourself back to the update path.

To install just download the file, drop it on your sdcard (no need to rename it), boot into stock recovery, and choose the .zip. Pretty simple.

What are you waiting for Grab the file here

Motorola Droid RAZR Coming in Electric Blue Version May 17th

Posted on 7th May 2012 by gacott in Droid Talk | Tags: , , , , , , ,

This is probably irrelevant for our users that already have a Motorola Droid RAZR, but for those that have been holding out or have friends/family that were waiting for the RAZR, you will have a new color choice. So far, the phone has come in black, white and purple. Now you can add electric blue to that list. This new blue RAZR was tipped off from VZW’s database system to Android Central. Perhaps Moto decided to do this to subtly compete more directly with the new Windows phone, the Lumia 900. It’s easy in our tech related forums to get so caught up with all the features and functions of a device to forget that many consumers out their make purchasing decisions based upon their emotions, especially how they feel about the "looks" of a device.

What do you guys think? If they had had this version available in the beginning, would you have opted for it?

[Rumor] Motorola DROID X2 Getting a Phantom Firmware OTA 1.3.418

Posted on 4th May 2012 by gacott in Droid Talk | Tags: , , , , , ,

This is an interesting bit of info. Apparently, there are some users out there that have received an OTA update on their Droid X2, including one user that received a replacement Droid X2 with the update pre-installed. The version is 1.3.418. Motorola had previously announced a soak test for the device, and that it would be coming soon. Oddly, there has been no indication that this is that update. In fact, Verizon’s support document still says that the update is "coming soon." Sound off in the thread if you are one of the folks that have received this. Everyone else… feel free to share your theory as to the origins of this phantom update.

Motorola XT898 Will Be an International GSM Version of the Droid 4

Posted on 25th April 2012 by gacott in Droid Talk | Tags: , , , ,

Motorola recently released the Droid 4 in the U.S. on Verizon to a ton of fan-fare. We even did a video review of the Droid 4 and came away very impressed. In fact, we see the device as the truest successor to the original Motorola Droid (except for the non-removable battery). Now, an international GSM version will be coming to market with the model number XT898. The GSM Motorola Droid 4 looks to proudly carry the Motorola Droid torch around the globe. No specifics were given about the device other than that it will come stock with ICS. It is speculated that the rest of the specs are identical to its American brother. Here’s a quote with a few more details,

Quote:

The new User Agent profile of Motorola XT898 and also Wi-Fi certification indicates that the phone is almost ready for launch. This Motorola XT898 from the chronological point of view appears to be yet another DROID series slider iteration model albeit in GSM/UMTS version.

The Motorola XT898 smartphone will feature 960×540 pixel resolution and would most likely feature 4-inch touchscreen display. The smartphone will also feature QWERTY keypad and most likely similar features as that of DROID 4 XT894 model. So the XT898 appears to be a world edition of the DROID 4 handset. Only aspect worth waiting for this handset will feature Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich by default.

As of now, there are no images or further details available on this handset but we expect Motorola to announce this handset at the CTIA- Wireless 2012 event in the first week of the next month.

Now our friends across the globe, and our international travelers can enjoy one of Motorola’s best phones outside the States!

Thanks for the tip, vmu!
